Research can take a myriad of forms, from checking the weather before we leave the house, googling the contact info of a state representative, to retrieving our own memories through free writing. From this view, we cannot go a single day without some kind—if not numerous kinds—of research. Perhaps the genre that displays its research most prominently is the text-based, written essay, which is what we’ll produce for the second major assignment in this course.
Many of you have already performed some formal research to present your proposals and we’ve now also had an orientation and workshop to Emerson myriad resources. With these tools and experience, we’re going to expand on the propositions and theses we’ve hatched from that first project to further explore the topic of the class: happiness!
As we’ve discussed in the propositions vs. theses conversation, each statement has its merits depending on the type of research paper you are cultivating: are you (dis)proving a set statement/concept or opening up a discussion for readers to come to their own conclusion after you present the facts? Each of you will have to decide this as you sit down and write that paper, but either way your paper will have either a main proposition or a main thesis that you come back to within each body paragraph. Some other elements/requirements for this paper include:
MLA formatted, including heading, in-text citations, and a Works Cited page
AT LEAST 3 sources, 1 of which MUST come from one of the Library’s sources (ex: the stacks or databases)
Is between 6-8 pages in length.
