The Inner Person essay will be one of two personal essays that you will write in this class that is entirely drawn from your own thoughts, feelings and experiences. It asks you to define for yourself a personal value that has been important in your life, and to explore it in a five paragraph essay. Any personal value can be your topic (except your family).* You should be able to define your value simply like “honesty” or “courage” or “hard work.” Or, you can choose something more concrete like why you value your guitar, volunteering, your vintage car, writing code, playing music, or baking cookies, etc. Title your essay, “Why I Value________.” You could set your thesis/preview up like this: The most important value in my life is (value here like truth, honesty, playing music, etc.) because:
________________,_______________,and __________________.
You may set your essay up as an exposition in which you explain or define the value. You may set it up as an argument stating why that value should be important to you and to others. You can describe the value. Finally, you can write a narrative in which you explain how a life experience made a certain value important to you. These various methods are described in detail in the “Forms of Discourse” section of Say It With Style on page197 which you are responsible for reading.
You should be sure to use the first person (I) in your essay. Follow the “composition sandwich” model for the structure of the five paragraphs. You should be reading the essays in the Inner Person section of Collegiate Reader as examples. Mark each essay for structure and make sure that you can answer the study questions at the end of each selection. You should define the vocabulary words at the end of each selection and make a hard copy to study with for the midterm and final.
Be sure include a title and to include a reading reference (with a source or footnote) somewhere in your essay like the quote used in the essays on page 200 or 205 in Collegiate R. A reading reference is a quote (it can be from anything) from an outside source that has relevance to your essay. You may use your reading reference in any part of the essay where it makes sense.
Save your essay as a combination of your name and the assignment in .doc (Word or .txt text) format. Example:
gomezr_innerperson.doc would be from Gomez, R. the Inner Person essay.
